Moving forward…

pIt’s time for a change. The blog will turn a new page. I will begin focusing more on social tools, technology, and how they relate to daily life. /p

Spring is here again…

BoiseIt’s time to come out of hibernation. The weather is slowly but surely warming and things are springing to life. Perhaps it’s time to take a cue from nature and get our gears moving. This weekend marked the opening of the Capital City Public Market in downtown Boise, and Alive After Five is not lingering to far behind. It’s time to get out your calendars and keep your eyes set on this years outdoor events! Boise Music Festival has announced quite the surprising line up for this years entertainment, which will include MC Hammer! While the Idaho Green Expo isn’t technically an outdoor event. It’s filled with great ideas to get you green, healthy, and active! What’s on your calendar for this season?

LAST OF THE BOYS | VAC

  • Wednesday, August 18th through Saturday, August 28th at the Visual Arts Collective
  • LAST OF THE BOYS
  • An Alley Mainstage production
  • Directed by Buffie Main
  • ALLEY REPERTORY THEATER http://www.alleyrep.org presents Last of the Boys. Steven Dietz, a Steinberg New Play Award finalist for this play, says Last of the Boys “is less a history of the (Vietnam) war and more a history of the men and women who survived it and who have to survive it on a daily basis.” The result of this fierce, funny, haunted story is an examining of identities and of the lasting mark history puts on those who experience deadly conflict, both directly and indirectly. In a time when we have yet to realize how the current war will mark history and each of our lives, LAST OF THE BOYS brings the experience of another generation forward holding a mirror, and in its reflection a stark reminder of the reality of life after battle.

HI-TOPS REUNION! | VAC

Friday, August 13th and Saturday, August 14th, at the Visual Arts Collective

Visual Arts CollectiveArguably the most popular Boise band of all time, Hi-Tops reunite for two special concerts with performances by original members. Returning to the stage for the first time since 2008, when they reunited to play two sold-out shows to an audience of over 770 fans! Hi-Tops formed in the mid-1980s in Boise, becoming the band that Curtis Stigers and Steve Fulton grew up in. The group recorded two albums in the mid and late 80s, and moved to San Diego together in 1988.

Original members John Laufenburger (lead vocals), Craig Sofaly (lead guitar and vocals), Sandon Mayhew (saxophone, lyricon and vocals), Ancel Schoberg (bass guitar), Steve Fulton (guitar, keys and vocals), and special guest Curtis Stigers (saxophone and vocals) will perform. Drummer Tim Willis will join the band in lieu of original drummer Dave Browne, who is unable to make the reunion.

“We decided it was time for Hi-Tops to rise again, and bring back the Boise band that spurred on so many great music careers and memorable nights,” said Steve Fulton, owner of Audio Lab and original member of Hi-Tops. “After the incredible turnout from our last reunion, we’re back by popular demand!”

Roaming Royalty (Seattle) | Mend (Boise) | VAC

Wednesday, August 11th to the Visual Arts Collective

Roaming RoyaltyROAMING ROYALTY http://www.reverbnation.com/roamingroyalty: Thick layers of instrumentation fronted by the layered vocals of Charles Kraut and Todd Dunnigan make up this sonic delight. Lyrically, Roaming Royalty goes for hooks while aiming for poignancy by writing about subjects like human rights activist Beate Sirota Gordon in “The Only Woman in the Room”. Subjects in Roaming Royalty’s songs are almost always experiencing or causing major changes, be it in their own world or in the world around us. Changes may be catastrophic at times, like the apocalypse in “Red Morning Joy” but the tone of their music is overwhelmingly optimistic.

MEND (http://www.myspace.com/mend) is a three-piece dark-wave electronic band, based out of Boise. Band members are Corey Hennis, Todd Mahoney, and Chet Slater.

FLOAT SEASON IS ON!

That’s right folks! It’s hot out, the sun is beating down on you and you need to cool off. My plan… head for the water. Weather you’re in for a lazy tubin trip down the Boise River or Indian Creek or maybe you’re more adventurous and cat-raft down the Payette or Salmon, taking a trip down river is a great way to beat the heat.

Floating the Boise is an easy trip for beginners. Barber Park is the starting point for most Boise River floaters. Barber Park is an Ada County Park, located 6 miles from downtown Boise on Eckert Rd. between Warm Springs and Boise Ave.

Raft and inner tube rentals are available at Barber Park through Epley’s Boise River Rentals. Free air stations available for floaters to fill their own rafts and tubes.

Ann Morrison Park, which is 6 miles downstream from Barber Park, is the take-out spot for floaters.

The Boise City Parks and Recreation Department has developed two take-out spots to relieve congestion — both on the left side of the river– on both sides of the footbridge. Shuttles are available from Ann Morrison Park to Barber Park.

Cascade Raft and KayakIf you’re looking for a bit more adventure than maybe you’d consider the Payette River. There are many companies like Cascade Raft and Kayak that offer guided trips. Packages of all sorts are available for the semi-squimish to the ultimate adventurer. Be safe and don’t try these trips unguided unless it’s your profession. Always wear proper safety gear.

New layout on BEER BLOG

Thanks to the suggestions of several visitors, I’ve re-designed the site to be more helpful to those new to the beer world. The beer reviews are now ranked and can be viewed from best to worst. The home page is a great short history of Ales VS Lagers and a few encouraging words on developing your pallet e.

Give BEER BLOG a visit and let me know what you think!

WHO WOULDN’T LIKE THIS PACKAGE DELIVERED TO YOUR DOOR?

There was a package waiting at my door when I got home from work today. A little gift from Jodi and Chandler in Portland… I wonder what it could be? I was expecting something from them related to PortlandWindandSolar.com, the website I’m working on for them but when I opened the box I was totally surprised!

Package o BeerThis was like Christmas in July for me and the gift couldn’t have been any better. A great selection for me to taste and review on the beer blog.

1. Tricerahops Double IPA from Ninkasi. Those who know me can testify that I’m a total HOP HEAD so I am excited about this one. Oh yeah… it also boasts a heavyweight 8.8% ABV and over 100 IBU!!!

2. Free Range Red Ale from Laurelwood. Here’s a quaint looking 6.10% ABV American Amber/Red Ale.

3. Chatoe Rogue First Growth Single Malt Ale. What more do you need after a title like that? Rogue knows beer and has a vast offering of excellent brews, I don’t expect this American Blonde Ale to be any different.

4. Bridgeport India Pale Ale. One of my good ol favorites. I remember this one being a solid IPA and at 5.5% ABV you can drink more than a few without it being overwhelming.

Well I better get them in the chiller so I can have a tasting tonight. Check up on beer.svendknutsen.com for my official review.

FIREWORKS DISPLAY BLOWN UP | BY FIREFIGHTERS… REALLY?

Volunteer firefighters were setting up a fireworks show in Mountain Home at 1:30PM Saturday when a mortar went off in one firefighter’s hand. This initial explosion caused the rest of the display to ignite.

I saw hundreds of amateur areal fireworks last night with no injury and then learned that the guys who should know better blew themselves up? Really?

Here’s the official news from Channel 7 KTVB if you don’t believe me.

A BRIEF MESSAGE FROM BEER BLOG

Beer BlogWell summer is slowly starting to heat up. If you’re looking for a new summer beer I’ve got some great suggestions and reviews at http://beer.svendknutsen.com

Beer Blog is my little hobby. Anyone who knows me can verify that beer is a passion of mine and I love finding and trying new brews. There’s a whole world of malt and hops to experience. There are chocolate malty creamy beers and sweet piney citrus ales and for the hot summer days light bubbly lagers.

I really invite you to pick up a variety this summer and try something new. If it’s good, let me know, I’d like to taste it too!

ITS NEVER TO EARLY TO THINK ABOUT CHRISTMAS | IS IT?

Well I spent this morning designing the new poster for this years Small Business Christmas Gala at the Boise Centre. Last years designed was inspired by boxes tied with ribbon, interpreted in a very sleek modern design. This year I’m taking a more wintery high energy design. Lines representing ice crystals for a backdrop and lots of blues and greys. The title and important info are red with pops of yellow to bring in that energy and festivity.
